Physical/Behavioral Characteristics

Physical Characteristics:
Features of Fragile X Syndrome usually does not appear until the onset of puberty. The physical characteristics of this disease is not apperant for everyone, therefore it is hard to determine if the person has this disease or not just by looking at their appearance
Males
  • Distinctive facial features (long faces, prominent ears-wider and longer)
  • Connective tissue problems
  • Enlarged testicles
Females
Females with Fragile X syndrome will also have the same physical characteristics as the males but usually to a lesser degree

Behavior Characteristics:
Positive Behavioral Characteristics:
· Sweet and Loving
· Desires for social interactions
· Good sense of humor
· Enjoys jokes and humorous situations

Other Behavioral Characteristics:
· Distractible, Implusive (80~90%)
· Hyperactivity disorders
· Short attension spans / difficulties staying on task
· Sensitivity to light/sound
· Poor eye contacts
· Easily stressed ~> anger/upset

Cognitive Development Characteristics

Cognitive Development is known as problem sloving abilities, thinking, concept understanding, information processing and overall intellegence. Most people with this disease has probelms with these kind of things. Their overall learning ability is slower than normal people, but they still have strengths and weaknesses of their own. 80% of the males are known to be delayed in learning. Based on institutionalized people, all of the people with this disease are known to have moderate or severe mental retardation. Their IQ usually result below 70 where the normal average is 100. For female, girls who are weak at maths are usually strong at reading and overall language levels.

Daily Living Skills

Eating, sleeping, dressing, washing and bathing, taking care of hygiene, and toileting are challenges for people with Fragile X Syndrome

Eating
- Difficulties in breast/bottle feeding for infants (sucking difficulties)
- Messy eaters (mouth filled with food) (tends to eat food with their hands)
- Strong preferences
Sleeping
- Disturbances in sleep patterns
- Difficulties in getting into sleep
- May awaken at night and wander around the house
- Needs calm environment
- Establish bedtime routines

Dressing
- Young children finds difficulties in dressing due to delay of mental development
- Finds uncomfortable with clothes with texture
- Once the clothes are on them, they want to take them off again
